Town Driving:

 

Observation Judgement and Awarenesss:

 

• Eye contact
• Consistent driving without unnecessary over caution or undue- hesitation.
• Good road position for changing road conditions.
• Early observations in order to reduce sudden braking or acceleration (taking into consideration environmental factors (see below)).
• Dealing with emergency vehicles (do’s and dont’s)
• Environmental factors: Efficacy of driving including both gears and gas (correct acceleration for conditions and gear).

Consideration for Vulnerable road users:

 

• Cyclists: Professional as well as obvious amateurs

•  Motorcyclists and mopeds (who also may be learners).

• Pedestrian, both young and old (who are often distracted on the phone or just not looking).

• Due consideration to pedestrian crossings as well as pedestrians crossing

• Schools and colleges: Look out for the usual tell tale Warning signs and lights.

Spatial Awareness and Clearance to others:

• Adequate clearance

• Safe stopping distances as well as following distances (2 second rule)

• Awareness and planning for other road users

• Trams (LRT’s) Look for signs and treat like railway crossings.

• Bus stops and bus lane awareness

• Cycle lane awareness and correct procedures re same.

• Good road position for varying conditions including emergency   vehicles.

Typical Features of Urban Roads:

• Multi-lane junctions

•  Unusual roundabouts

• Bus and cycle lanes

• Under as well as over passes.

• Gyratory systems (a more complex or multi lane roundabout).

• Road markings (they maybe early warning you of potential  danger(s) ahead) or simply telling of changing lanes and to get in  the correct one.
