See and be seen:

 

• Clean windows and windscreen
• Importance of washers and wipers
• Windscreen demisters
• Heated windows front and back
• Fog lights front and rear (correct time to use them 100 Metres or less)
• Use of lights as appropriate to varying conditions:
• Rain; sleet; snow and fog/mist.
• Shadows and effects on your vision
• Bright light e.g. Winter sun. Wet roads and the suns reflection. Oily roads and recognition of   same (rainbow effect on wet road).

 

Skidding and avoidance:

 

• Drivers’ health (contributing factor).
• Road conditions and road surface
• Aquaplaning
• Skid prevention: effective braking and effects of ABS, ESP; EBD.
• Skid correction
• Use of steering and controls
• Tyres, condition and their tread (legal tread depth and implication of reduced stopping distances).
• Vehicles footprint and drivers ability to recognise same (familiarity of car from driver).

 

Speed and stopping distances:
